Introduction

    Hello, My name is Luna Wisdom. I am a first-year at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI. I plan on majoring in biology, but creative activities have always been important to me. I have been drawing since I was a child and I love to sing, I also enjoy taking pictures of nature whenever I find something that piques my interest. Drawing has always been a good way for me to help myself deal with my emotions and express myself. I'm very excited to be in an art class this term as I sometimes struggle with finding the motivation to draw and art classes help to push me to be creative. 

    I work with a lot of different mediums, like paint, clay, ink and pens, but my preferred medium is graphite pencil or colored pencil on paper. I love to make large colored illustrations but I haven't had much time with school to work on pieces like that. So, for my project for this class, I am going to make a colored illustration on a piece of 11in by 14in illustration board. For this piece I really wanna play around with different lighting by making my light source be a different color that the usual white/warm light I use in most of my drawings. I'm going to be posting progress photos once every week both to this blog and to my Instagram, @lunassketches. Also bellow are some pictures of my previous work.

    The first chapter of The Social Photo by Nathan Jurgenson talks a lot about how photography is a form of communication and expression. Although most of the people who read this blog wont see my art in its physical form, my photos will hopefully communicate what I am expressing on the paper. I truly hope you all enjoy going through this process with me, I think it will tun out to be a fun piece and a fun experience.

Progress Post 1

     This is the first progress photo of my project. It is a rough sketch on illustration board, it needs some more work but I'm hoping to start color this week. The photo has also been uploaded to Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/lunassketches/        This week's section of the reading talks about what texture in art is and how different types of texture can be produced in different ways.  On page 64-65 in the section labeled "Textured Logotypes" it talks about how textures were used to "convey ideas of movement and change". With drawing its more difficult to capture texture than with another medium like photography. So, I really want to focus on  using different mediums and colors to create texture and depth, especially in the hair. In this piece I think texture and movement will be a very important element.

Progess Post 6

 "Social photos are not primarily about making media but more about sharing eyes. They are about developing and conveying your view, your experience, your imagination" (Jurgenson, 84). I like this quote a lot because I use photos a lot in making art and this quote does a good job of explaining reasons why social photos are different and useful. I love taking photos of my work in different progress stages because it shows what I'm working on in the moment and it allows me to look back and see my process and the ideas behind my finished piece. I also use photos a lot when I'm working. Reference photos are really important to me for getting inspiration and making sure my drawings are proportionally and anatomically correct. Taking pictures of my work also allows me to show what I've done to a much larger group of people than showing the physical work allows.

Progress Post 2

     Drawing was a bit of a struggle for me this past week but I've gotten my illustration to the point where I can begin coloring! Since I was having a difficult time getting into the right state of mind to draw, I ended up spending some time deciding on my coloring palette. I was also looking through some old illustrations and looking specifically at the techniques I used to create them.     I think this ties in very well with this week's theme of nostalgia. Going through my old work and looking at how I've improved and how my style has changed over the years, is always a very enlightening and nostalgic experience for me. Looking at old art allows me to pick out things I like that I'd like to recreate and things I don't like that I want to avoid. One quote I really liked from the reading was "layers allow the designer to treat the image as a collection of assets, a database of possibilities" (Lupton, Phillips, 127).
